~6min read

Polishing and waxing the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) protects the paint from environmental influences. This section explains the correct procedure for matt paint and the recommended use of care products. It also describes care of the water-repellent surface layer and the vehicle's rust protection. Tips on interior cleaning and care of leather upholstery round off the information.

Polishing and waxing

Polish and wax your vehicle if the paint appears dull or if you want additional protection for the paint.

The vehicle normally needs polishing at the earliest after one year. However, the vehicle can be waxed during this time. Do not polish or wax the vehicle in direct sunlight.

Before polishing or waxing, wash and dry the vehicle thoroughly.

Remove asphalt and tar stains with asphalt remover or white spirit. Stubborn stains can be removed with fine rubbing compound for vehicle paint.

Polish the paint with a polishing agent and then wax with liquid or paste wax. Follow the instructions on the packaging precisely. Many products contain both polish and wax.

IMPORTANT

Avoid applying wax to and polishing plastic and rubber parts.

When using a degreaser on plastic and rubber parts, rub only with light pressure, if necessary. Use a soft sponge.

When polishing trim strips, the glossy surface may be damaged or worn.

Do not use polishes that contain abrasives.

IMPORTANT

Use only paint treatments recommended by Volvo. Other treatments, such as preservatives, sealants, protective treatments, gloss sealants or similar, may damage the paint. Paint damage caused by such treatments is not covered by the Volvo warranty.

Water- and dirt-repellent surface layer

The windows are provided with a surface layer that improves visibility in poor weather conditions.

Water- and dirt-repellent surface layer*

Natural wear of the water-repellent surface layer occurs.

Care:

  • Never use products such as car wax, degreasers or similar on glass surfaces, as this could destroy the water-repellent properties.
  • When cleaning, make sure the glass surface is not damaged.
  • Use only a plastic ice scraper to remove ice, to avoid damaging the glass surfaces.
  • To maintain the water-repellent properties of the side windows, treatment with a special aftercare product is recommended, available from Volvo Partners. Apply the product for the first time after three years, and then once a year.
IMPORTANT

Do not use a metal ice scraper to remove ice from the windows. To remove ice from the mirrors, use the electric heating, see Windows and rear-view mirrors - electric heating.

Corrosion protection

The vehicle has already received complete and very thorough corrosion protection treatment at the factory. Parts of the body are made of galvanized sheet metal. The underbody is fitted with a wear-resistant anti-corrosion coating. A thin, penetrating corrosion inhibitor fluid has been injected into beams, cavities, closed sections and side doors.

Inspection and care

The corrosion protection of the vehicle normally does not need to be maintained, but keeping the vehicle clean further reduces the risk of corrosion. Chrome trim should, where possible, not come into contact with highly alkaline or acidic cleaning agents. Stone chip damage should be repaired as soon as possible after it is discovered.

Interior cleaning

Use only cleaning agents and care products recommended by Volvo. Clean the vehicle regularly and treat stains immediately. Before cleaning with a cleaning agent, it is important to vacuum the interior.

IMPORTANT
  • Some garments (such as dark jeans or suede clothing) can transfer color to the upholstery. If this happens, clean and treat the affected areas as soon as possible.
  • Never use strong solvents such as windshield washer fluid, white spirit or similar to clean the interior. These agents can damage upholstery and other interior parts.
  • Never spray cleaning agent directly onto parts with electrical switches and controls. Instead, wipe them with a cloth dampened with cleaning agent.
  • Sharp-edged objects and hook-and-loop fasteners can damage the vehicle's fabric upholstery.

Fabric upholstery and headliner

Volvo offers a fabric care kit for fabric upholstery and the headliner, which preserves the properties of the textile materials when applied correctly. The fabric care kit is available from a Volvo Partner.

Leather upholstery

Volvo leather upholstery is treated so that it retains its original appearance.

Leather is a natural product that changes over time and develops a certain patina. To keep the leather's original color shade and other properties, it must be cleaned and treated regularly. With the Volvo Leather Care Kit/Wipes, Volvo offers a complete product for cleaning and treating leather upholstery, which preserves the protective surface layer of the leather when applied correctly.

For the best results, Volvo recommends cleaning the leather upholstery one to four times a year (or more often as needed) and treating it with leather protection cream. The Volvo Leather Care Kit/Wipes is available from a Volvo Partner.

Leather steering wheel

Leather must be able to breathe. Never cover the leather steering wheel with a plastic cover.

The Volvo Leather Care Kit/Wipes is recommended for cleaning the leather steering wheel.

Plastic, metal and wood interior trim parts

For cleaning details and surfaces in the interior, a split-fiber cloth lightly dampened with water or a microfiber cloth available from Volvo Partners is recommended.

Do not scratch or rub at one spot.

Do not use aggressive stain removers.

In more difficult cases, a special cleaning agent available from Volvo Partners can be used.

Seat belt

For cleaning, use water and a synthetic detergent. A special textile cleaning agent is available from a Volvo Partner. Make sure the belt is dry before rolling it back up.

Floor mats and carpet

For separate cleaning of the carpet and the floor mats, remove the floor mats. Remove dust and dirt with a vacuum cleaner. The floor mats are secured with retaining pins.

To remove a floor mat, grip it at all retaining pins and lift it straight up.

Place the floor mat in position and press it firmly onto all retaining pins.

WARNING

Use only one floor mat per seat position. Before driving, make sure the driver's floor mat is correctly positioned and secured to the retaining pins so that it cannot become trapped under the pedals.

For stains on the carpet, a special textile cleaning agent is recommended after vacuuming. Clean the carpet with the agent recommended by a Volvo Partner.

The fuses in the luggage compartment of the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) are located behind the side trim on the left-hand side. They protect electrical components such as the trailer socket, tailgate or auxiliary heater, among others.

Access is through a small service flap. After replacement, make sure the trim is correctly reinstalled to avoid rattling noises and damage.

Volvo provides a clear and easily accessible fuse layout for simple maintenance.
