Windscreen washer fluid - filling. Starter battery - general. Battery - symbols.

~4min read

Maintaining the windscreen washer fluid and starter battery on the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) is essential for safe vehicle operation. This section describes how to fill the washer fluid, the recommended mixture for freezing conditions, and the warnings for low fluid levels. It also covers important information on the starter battery, including choosing the correct type, safety precautions when replacing the battery, and tips for extending its service life. Notes on battery warning symbols support safe use.

Windscreen washer fluid - filling

Windscreen washer fluid is used to keep the headlights and windows clean. At temperatures below freezing, use windscreen washer fluid with antifreeze.

Scheibenreinigungsflüssigkeit - Einfüllen

Top up the windscreen washer fluid through the filler neck with the blue cap.

The windscreen washer system and the headlight washer system share one fluid reservoir.

CAUTION

When about 1 litre of windscreen washer fluid remains in the reservoir, a corresponding message and the symbol appear in the instrument cluster prompting you to top up the reservoir.

Required quality: Volvo-recommended windscreen washer fluid, with antifreeze for cold weather and temperatures below freezing.

IMPORTANT

Use Volvo Genuine windscreen washer fluid or an equivalent product with the recommended pH value between 6 and 8, in a ready-to-use mixture (e.g. 1:1 with neutral water).

IMPORTANT

At temperatures below freezing, use windscreen washer fluid with antifreeze so that the fluid does not freeze in the pump, the reservoir or the hoses.

Capacities

  • Vehicles with headlight washer system: 6.5 litres.
  • Vehicles without headlight washer system: 4.5 litres.

Starter battery - general

The starter battery supplies power to the starter motor and other electrical equipment in the vehicle.

The starter battery is a conventional 12 V battery.

The service life and performance of the starter battery are affected by the number of starts and discharges, driving style, driving conditions, climate and similar factors.

  • Never disconnect the starter battery while the engine is running.
  • Check that the starter battery cables are connected correctly and tightened securely.
Starterbatterie - Allgemeines

A According to SAE or EN standard.

B Cold Cranking Amperes.

IMPORTANT

When replacing the starter battery in vehicles with start/stop function, always fit the correct battery type: EFB11 in vehicles with manual transmission and AGM12 in vehicles with automatic transmission.

IMPORTANT

When replacing the starter battery, make sure that the cold cranking performance and type of the new battery match the original battery (see the label on the battery).

CAUTION
  • The battery
size must match the dimensions of the original starter battery.
  • The height of the starter battery varies
    depending on size.
WARNING
  • Starter batteries can produce highly explosive hydrogen gas. A single spark, which can occur if the jump-start cables are connected incorrectly, can cause the battery to explode.
  • The starter battery contains sulfuric acid, which can cause severe burns.
  • If acid comes into contact with the eyes, skin or clothing, rinse thoroughly with water. If acid splashes into the eyes, seek medical attention immediately!
IMPORTANT

The starter battery or auxiliary battery (p. 390) may only be charged with modern battery chargers that work with regulated charging voltage. Rapid charging can damage the battery and must not be used.

11 Enhanced Flooded Battery.

12 Absorbed Glass Mat.

IMPORTANT

If the following point is not observed, the energy-saving function for infotainment may temporarily fail after connecting an external starter battery or battery charger, and/or a message in the instrument cluster information display about the starter battery charge status may be temporarily out of date:

  • The negative battery terminal of the vehicle's starter battery must never be used to connect an external starter battery or battery charger. Only the vehicle chassis may be used as the earth point.

See Jump starting - this describes where and how to position the clamps.

CAUTION

Frequent deep discharging shortens the service life of the starter battery.

The service life of the starter battery is affected by several factors, such as

driving conditions and climate.

The starting capacity of the battery gradually decreases over time. It must therefore be charged if the vehicle is not used for a long time or only driven short distances.

Severe cold further reduces the starting capacity.

To keep the starter battery in good condition, it is recommended to drive the vehicle at least 15 minutes per week or to connect the battery to a battery charger with automatic maintenance charging.

A starter battery that is kept fully charged at all times has a shorter service life.

Refilling the windshield washer fluid on the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) is done via the filler neck with the blue cap. Vehicles with headlamp washer system require a larger filling quantity. At temperatures below freezing, antifreeze is essential to prevent damage to the pump, reservoir and lines.

The starter battery supplies the starter motor and other electrical equipment. Its service life depends on driving conditions, climate and care. It is important to select the correct battery type for the vehicle equipment and to ensure correct connections.

Volvo places the highest priority on safety and recommends using genuine parts and regularly checking the battery voltage.
