Engine compartment - Check. Engine oil - general

~3min read

On the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016), regular checks of engine oil, coolant, power steering fluid and windshield washer fluid are essential for the reliability of the vehicle. This section describes the recommended intervals and important precautions when working in the engine compartment. It also explains the importance of using approved engine oil to minimize wear and optimize fuel consumption. Notes on warning systems and on safe topping up help extend engine life.

Engine compartment - Check

Certain oils and fluids should be checked regularly.

Regular checks

Check the following oils and fluids at regular intervals, e.g. when refueling:

  • Coolant
  • Engine oil
  • Power steering fluid
  • Windshield washer fluid
WARNING

Remember that the cooling fan (at the front of the engine compartment, behind the radiator) may start some time after the engine has been switched off.

Always have the engine cleaned by a workshop; a Volvo authorized workshop is recommended. If the engine is warm, there is a risk of fire.

Engine oil - general

To comply with the recommended service intervals, approved engine oil must be used.

Volvo recommends:

For driving under severe conditions, see Engine oil - severe driving conditions.

IMPORTANT

To meet the requirements for the engine service interval, all engines are filled at the factory with a specially adapted synthetic engine oil. The oil was selected with great
care, taking into account service life, startability, fuel consumption and environmental impact.

To comply with the recommended service intervals, approved engine oil must be used.

Always use the specified oil quality when topping up and when changing the oil, otherwise service life, startability, fuel consumption and environmental impact may be adversely affected.

Volvo Car Corporation will not accept any warranty claims if engine oil of the specified quality and viscosity is not used.

Volvo recommends having the oil changed at a Volvo authorized workshop.

Volvo uses various systems to warn of low/high oil level or low oil pressure. Certain engines have an oil pressure sensor; in this case the low oil pressure warning symbol is shown in the instrument cluster.

Other variants have an oil level sensor; in this case the driver is informed via the warning symboland a display message. Some variants have both systems. For more information, contact a Volvo Partner.

Change the engine oil and oil filter at the intervals specified in the Service and Warranty Booklet.

It is permissible to use oil of a higher quality than specified. When driving under severe conditions, Volvo recommends an oil of higher quality, see Engine oil - severe driving conditions.

For the refill capacity, see Engine oil - Quality and capacity.

Regular checks of engine oil, coolant, power steering fluid and windshield washer fluid on the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) are essential for the service life and reliability of the vehicle. Maintenance should be carried out in accordance with the recommendations in the Service Booklet to prevent damage and malfunctions.

Volvo recommends using approved oils and fluids to maintain warranty claims. In particular, make sure that the specified engine oil quality and viscosity are observed in order to optimize starting behavior, consumption and environmental impact.

Regularly topping up with the correct fluids and checking the fluid levels contribute actively to operational safety and help prevent costly repairs.
