Repairing paint damage on the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) prevents rust formation and maintains the body's protection. This section describes how to repair stone chips and scratches and lists the materials required. It also explains the correct color code and the proper application of primer, base coat and clear coat. Tips on preparation and on protecting surrounding areas help achieve a clean result.

The paint is an important factor in rust protection and must be checked regularly.

The most common types of paint damage are, for example, stone chip damage, scratches, and damage to wheel arch edges, doors and bumpers.

Repairing minor paint damage

To prevent rust from forming, damaged paint must be repaired immediately.

Materials that may be required

  • Primer19 - for example, a special adhesion primer in an aerosol can is available for plastic-coated bumpers.
  • Base coat and clear coat - available in aerosol cans or as touch-up pens20
  • Masking tape
  • Fine abrasive paper19

Color code

The color code label is located on the door pillar of the vehicle and becomes visible when the right rear door is opened.

Farbcode
  1. Exterior color code
  2. If applicable, second exterior color code

It is important to use the correct color. For the position of the product sticker, see Type designations.

Repairing minor paint damage such as stone chips and scratches

Reparieren von kleinen Lackschäden wie Steinschlägen und Kratzern

Before starting work, the vehicle must be clean and dry and have a temperature above 15 °C.

  1. Stick a piece of masking tape onto the damaged surface. Then pull the tape off so that any loose paint residue is removed with it.

If the damage extends down to the bare metal (sheet metal), it is advisable to use a primer. When plastic surfaces are damaged, an adhesion primer should be used for better results - spray into the lid of the aerosol can and apply the adhesion primer thinly with a brush.

  2. Before painting, the area can be lightly sanded locally with very fine abrasive material if necessary (for example, at uneven edges). Clean the area thoroughly and allow it to dry.
  3. Stir the primer thoroughly and apply it with a fine brush, a match stick or similar. Finish with base coat and clear coat once the primer is dry.
  4. For scratches, proceed as described above, but apply masking tape around the damaged area to protect the undamaged paint.
CAUTION

If the stone chip does not extend down to the metal surface (sheet metal) and an undamaged paint layer remains, the base coat and clear coat can be applied immediately after cleaning the area.

The battery in the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) can be charged via the charging terminal system in the engine compartment. The positive terminal is fitted with a red plastic cover, and the negative terminal is designed as a ground point on the body. This allows safe charging without removing the battery.

Volvo recommends using chargers with a regulated voltage curve to protect the vehicle's electronics. Following the charging instructions ensures a long battery service life and prevents damage to the vehicle electrical system.

The clear warnings and markings make it easier for less experienced drivers to handle the vehicle safely.
