Battery - Start/Stop. Electrical system

~4min read

The battery system in the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) is designed with a dual battery setup for vehicles with start/stop system. This section explains the function of the main and auxiliary batteries as well as their location and technical data. Special notes cover the correct battery type when replacing and avoiding errors when connecting external chargers. Maintenance recommendations support operational reliability.

Battery - Start/Stop

Vehicles with start/stop function have an auxiliary battery in addition to the starter battery.

Vehicles equipped with start/stop function are fitted with two 12 V batteries: a particularly powerful starter battery and a support battery that assists during the start sequence of the start/stop function.

For more information on the start/stop function, see Start/Stop*.

For more information on the vehicle's starter battery, see Jump starting with battery.

The following table lists the technical data of the starter and auxiliary batteries in vehicles with start/stop function.

Batterie - Start/Stop
Batterie - Start/Stop

A according to EN standard.

B Cold Cranking Amperes.

C Manual transmission

D Automatic transmission.

E Manual transmission with start/stop function, automatic engine stop only when the vehicle is completely stationary.

F Other.

IMPORTANT

When replacing the starter battery in vehicles with start/stop function, always install the correct battery type: EFB13 in vehicles with manual transmission and AGM14 in vehicles with automatic transmission.

When replacing the starter battery, an AGM battery must be installed.

CAUTION
  • The higher the electrical power consumption in the vehicle, the more the generator must deliver and the more strongly the batteries must be charged; this increases fuel consumption.
  • If the capacity of the starter battery has dropped below the lowest permissible level, the start/stop function is switched off.

If the start/stop function is temporarily switched off due to excessive power consumption, the following occurs:

  • The engine starts automatically15 without the driver depressing the clutch pedal (manual transmission).
  • The engine starts automatically without the driver removing the foot from the service brake pedal (automatic transmission).

Battery location

Position Batterien
A: Left-hand drive. B: Right-hand drive. (1) Starter battery16 (2) Auxiliary battery.

The auxiliary battery normally requires no more maintenance than the standard starter battery. If you have questions or problems, contact a workshop. A Volvo authorized workshop is recommended.

IMPORTANT

If the following point is not observed, the Start/Stop function may be temporarily disabled after connecting the external starter battery or battery charger:

  • The negative battery terminal of the vehicle's starter battery must never be used to connect an external starter battery or battery charger. Only the vehicle chassis may be used as the earth point.

See Jump starting - this describes where and how to position the clamps.

13 Enhanced Flooded Battery.

14 Absorbed Glass Mat.

15 Automatic engine start is only possible when the selector lever is in Neutral.

16 For a detailed description of the starter battery, see Starter battery - general.

CAUTION

If the starter battery is discharged so far that everything is "black" and the vehicle has lost essentially all normal electrical functions, and the engine is started with the help of an external battery or a battery charger, the Start/Stop function is activated.

Automatic engine stop is then possible, but due to the insufficient capacity of the starter battery, the Start/Stop function may not be able to restart the engine automatically after a stop.

For the automatic restart after an auto-stop to succeed, the battery must first be charged. At an outside temperature of +15 °C, the battery must be charged for at least one hour. At a lower outside temperature, a charging time of 3-4 hours is recommended.

It is best to charge the battery with an external battery charger.

If this is not possible, it is recommended to temporarily deactivate the Start/Stop function until the starter battery has been sufficiently charged.

For further information on charging the vehicle's starter battery, see Starter battery - general.

Electrical System

The electrical system is a single-wire system, in which the chassis and engine block are used as conductors.

The vehicle is equipped with a voltage-regulated alternator.

The size, type and capacity of the starter battery vary depending on the vehicle's equipment and scope of functions.

IMPORTANT

When replacing the starter battery, make sure that the cold cranking performance and type of the new battery match the original battery (see the label on the battery).

Vehicles with Start/Stop function in the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) are equipped with an additional auxiliary battery. It supports the starting sequence and ensures smooth engine starts in Stop mode. The correct battery type (EFB or AGM) is essential for proper function.

High current consumption in the vehicle may temporarily deactivate the Start/Stop function. Volvo recommends checking the battery regularly and charging it as needed to prevent malfunctions.

The combination of a powerful starter battery and an auxiliary battery underlines the vehicle's high standards of safety and comfort.
