Brake and clutch fluid - Fluid level
The brake and clutch fluid in the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) is of the highest priority, as it directly affects safety. This section describes the location of the reservoir and the required intervals for checking and changing the fluid. Special notes are also provided for vehicles under severe use, such as driving in mountainous regions. Recommendations for correct topping up and for determining the cause of fluid loss support safe operation.
The brake and clutch fluid level must be between the MIN and MAX marks on the reservoir.
Checking the fluid level
The brake and clutch fluid share a common reservoir. The level must be between the MIN and MAX marks visible on the reservoir.
Check the fluid level regularly.
Change the brake fluid every two years or every second scheduled service.
Vehicles whose brakes are subjected to frequent and heavy use, for example driving in mountainous terrain or in tropical climates with high humidity, must have the fluid changed once a year.
For fill quantities and recommended brake fluid quality, see Brake Fluid - Quality and Fill Quantity.
WARNINGIf the brake fluid level is below the MIN mark in the brake fluid reservoir, do not drive the vehicle until brake fluid has been added. Volvo recommends having a Volvo Retailer inspect the cause of the brake fluid loss.
Filler opening

The fluid reservoir is located on the driver's side.
The fluid reservoir is protected by the cover that covers the cool zone of the engine compartment. To reach the reservoir cap, first remove the round cover.
Turn the round cover to open it.
Unscrew the cap on the reservoir and top up with fluid. The level must be between the MIN and MAX marks. The marks are on the inside of the reservoir.
IMPORTANT Do not forget to refit the cover.
The brake and clutch fluid in the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) must be between the MIN and MAX marks. It is housed together in one reservoir and should be checked regularly. For heavy loads such as mountain driving, an annual change is recommended.
If the level is below MIN, do not continue driving until brake fluid has been added. Volvo recommends having the cause of the fluid loss checked immediately.
FAQ
How do I access the reservoir?
Open the round cover in the engine compartment, then unscrew the reservoir cap.
Why is regular changing important?
