Wheel and rim dimensions. Tyres - Sizes. Tyres - Load Index. Tyres - Speed Ratings

~3min read

Wheel and rim dimensions, as well as selecting the correct tyre size, are essential for the driving safety of the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016). This section explains type approval, size examples and important notes on permissible wheel and tyre combinations. Load index and speed ratings are also explained. Recommendations for correct selection help avoid damage and safety risks.

Wheel and rim dimensions

Wheel and rim dimensions are designated as shown in the example in the table below.

The vehicle has EU type approval.

This means that certain combinations of wheels (rims) and tyres are approved.

All wheels (rims) have a size designation, such as: 7Jx16x50.

Tyres - Sizes

The vehicle's tyres come in specific sizes; examples are shown in the table below.

All car tyres carry a size designation. Example: 225/50R17 98W.

The vehicle approval applies to specific combinations of rims and tyres.

WARNING

19-inch tyres must never be fitted to vehicles that are not equipped with the R-Design or Sport chassis option. Using 19-inch tyres on vehicles with a standard chassis creates a safety risk, risk of damage to the vehicle and a deterioration in the vehicle's handling.

Tyres - Load Index

The load index indicates the load-carrying capacity of the car tyre.

Every tire has a specific load index (LI) that indicates the maximum permissible load on the tire. The weight of the vehicle determines the load capacity the tires must have. The lowest permissible value is given in the load index table.

Tires - speed ratings

Every tire is designed for a specific maximum speed and therefore belongs to a specific speed rating (SS - Speed Symbol).

The speed rating of the tires must be at least equal to the maximum speed of the vehicle. The following table gives the maximum permissible speed for each speed rating (SS). The only exception to these requirements is winter tires, which may have a lower speed rating. Never drive the vehicle faster than the rating of such a tire allows (for example, a tire with rating Q may be driven at max. 160 km/h). In principle, however, road conditions, not the tire speed rating, determine how fast the vehicle may be driven.

CAUTION The table shows the maximum permissible speed.

WARNING

The vehicle must be fitted with tires that have the same or a higher load index (LI) than specified, and the same or a higher speed rating (SS) than specified. If a tire with a load index or speed rating that is too low is used, it may overheat.

Choosing the correct wheel and tire sizes is essential for the Volvo S80 (2nd gen). Only approved combinations ensure driving safety and comfort. The load index and speed rating must also meet the requirements.

19-inch tires are approved only for models with R-Design or sport suspension. Incorrect sizes can adversely affect handling and pose a safety risk.

Volvo recommends consulting an authorized Volvo retailer to select the right tires for your vehicle.
