Tightening torque found on this page

The wheel bolts and the choice of winter tires on the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) play an important role in winter safety. This section describes the wheel bolt tightening torque and the importance of using approved wheels. It also provides tips on breaking in studded tires, tread depth and the use of snow chains. Information on legal requirements completes the section.

Wheel bolts

Wheel bolts are used to secure the wheel to the hub. They are available in different designs.

IMPORTANT

The wheel bolts must be tightened to 140 N·m. Overtightening can damage the bolted connection.

Use only wheels tested and approved by Volvo that are included in the Volvo original accessories range. Check the tightening torque with a torque wrench.

Lockable wheel bolts*

Lockable wheel bolts* can be used on both aluminum and steel wheels. There is space for the sleeve of the lock
able wheel bolts under the cargo floor.

Winter Tires

Winter tires are tires adapted for winter conditions.

Winter Tires

Volvo recommends winter tires in specified winter tire sizes. Tire sizes depend on the engine type. To drive with winter tires, the correct tire type must be fitted to all four wheels.

CAUTION

We recommend that you consult a Volvo retailer to choose the most suitable wheel and the correct tire type.

Studs

Winter tires with studs must be broken in carefully over 500–1000 km so that the studs seat properly in the tire. Breaking in extends the service life of the tires and especially of the studs.

CAUTION

Legal requirements for the use of studded tires vary from country to country.

Tread depth

Roads with ice, snow and low temperatures place greater demands on tires than driving in summer. Volvo therefore recommends a minimum tread depth of 4 mm for winter tires.

Using snow chains

Snow chains may only be fitted to the front wheels (this also applies to all-wheel drive vehicles). Never drive faster than 50 km/h with snow chains fitted.

Do not drive unnecessarily on roads that have not been cleared, as this causes heavy wear to both the snow chains and the tires.

WARNING

Use only Volvo original snow chains or similar snow chains that are matched to the correct dimensions for the model, tire and wheel. If you are unsure, we recommend consulting an authorized Volvo retailer. Incorrect snow chains can cause serious damage to your vehicle and lead to an accident.
