Tire pressure monitoring* 4. Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)* 12 - General. Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)* 19 - Settings
The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) on the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) provides an additional safety feature. This section describes how the system works, the warnings, and the difference between TPMS and TM. It also explains how the system is maintained and checked after wheel changes. Information on the function of the TPMS sensors supports safe use.
Tire pressure monitoring*4
The tire pressure monitoring system warns the driver if the pressure in one or more tires of the vehicle is too low. In certain markets, tire pressure monitoring is standard equipment as required by applicable law.
There are two versions of tire pressure monitoring: TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) and TM (Tire Monitor).
You can check which system your vehicle has by opening the MY CAR menu system and then the vehicle settings:
- If the Tire pressure menu appears, the vehicle has TPMS. See Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)* - General.
- If the Tire monitoring menu appears, the vehicle has TM. See Tire Pressure Monitoring (TM)*.
The system does not replace regular tire maintenance.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)*12 - General
The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System)* warns the driver if the pressure in one or more tyres of the vehicle is too low.
The tyre pressure monitoring system uses sensors located in the valve of each wheel. When the vehicle has driven approx. 30 km/h, the system detects the tyre pressure.
If the pressure is too low, the warning light
on the instrument cluster illuminates and one of the following messages is displayed:
- Tyre pressure low Check right front tyre
- Tyre pressure low Check left front tyre
- Tyre pressure low Check right rear tyre
- Tyre pressure low Check left rear tyre
- Tyre needs air now Check right front tyre
- Tyre needs air now Check left front tyre
- Tyre needs air now Check right rear tyre
- Tyre needs air now Check left rear tyre
- Tyre pressure system service required
Both factory-fitted and optional wheels may be equipped with TPMS sensors in the valves.
If wheels without TPMS sensors are fitted, or if a sensor is not
functioning, Tyre pressure system service required is displayed.
Always check the system after a wheel change to make sure the replacement wheels work with the system.
For information on correct tyre pressure, see Tyres - Air pressure.
The system does not replace regular tire maintenance.
IMPORTANTIf a fault occurs in the TPMS system, the warning light flashes
on the instrument cluster for approx. 1 minute and then remains lit. A message is also displayed in the instrument cluster.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)*19 - Calibration (recalibration)
The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System)* warns the driver if the pressure in one or more tyres of the vehicle is too low.
TPMS can be calibrated according to Volvo's tyre pressure recommendations, e.g. when driving with a high load.
CAUTION The vehicle must be stationary when calibration starts.
Calibration is performed using the controls in the centre console, see MY CAR.
- Inflate the tyres to the desired pressure according to the tyre pressure label on the driver's side B-pillar (between the front and rear doors).
- Start the engine.
- Select the MY CAR menu system to open the tyre pressure menus.
- Select Calibrate tyre pressure and press OK.
- Drive at a speed of at least 30 km/h for at least 10 minutes.
> After being initiated by the driver, calibration is carried out automatically. When calibration is complete, the system does not confirm this.
The new reference value applies until steps 1-5 are carried out again.

The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) in the Volvo S80 (2nd generation) warns of low tyre pressure and thus actively supports safety. However, the system does not replace regular manual checking of tyre pressure. After a wheel change, check that the system is compatible with the fitted wheels.
In the event of a malfunction, a warning light illuminates or flashes and a message appears in the display. The driver always remains responsible for correct tyre pressure.
FAQ
What does a flashing TPMS warning light mean?
This indicates a fault in the system. A workshop should be visited.
Does TPMS detect sudden tyre damage?
No, sudden damage cannot be indicated in advance.
