Tyre Monitor (TM)* 32
In the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016), the Tyre Monitor (TM) system enhances safety by detecting pressure loss based on tyre rotational speeds. This section describes messages in the instrument cluster and the meaning of the warning symbols. It also explains the system calibration, which is required after a tyre change or a pressure change. Recommendations for regular checks and for performing calibration correctly complete the section.
To check for correct tyre pressure, the Tyre Monitor (TM) system measures the speed at which the tyres rotate. At low pressure, the tyre diameter changes and so does the rotational speed. By comparing the individual tyres with each other, the system detects whether one or more tyres have low pressure.
Messages
If the tyre pressure is low, the warning light comes on
on the instrument cluster illuminates and one of the following messages is displayed:
- Tyre pressure low Check right front tyre
- Tyre pressure low Check left front tyre
- Tyre pressure low Check right rear tyre
- Tyre pressure low Check left rear tyre
- Low tyre pressure, check tyres
- Tyre pressure system service required
- Tyre pressure system currently not activated
If a fault occurs in the TM system, the warning light flashes
on the instrument cluster for approx. 1 minute and then remains lit. A message is also displayed in the instrument cluster.
The system does not replace regular tire maintenance.
TM calibration
For the TM system to work correctly, a reference value for the tyre pressure must be established. This is required after every tyre change and every change in tyre pressure.
Recalibration
Calibration is performed using the controls in the centre console, see MY CAR.
- Switch off the ignition.
- Inflate all tyres to the desired pressure according to the tyre pressure label on the driver's side B-pillar (between the front and rear doors), then turn the key to position II, see Key positions - Functions at different levels.
- Select the MY CAR menu system to open the tyre pressure monitoring menus.
- Select Calibrate tyre pressure and press OK.
- Start the vehicle and drive off.
> Recalibration takes place while driving and can be interrupted at any time. If the engine is switched off during recalibration, it resumes once the vehicle is driven again. When calibration is complete, the system gives no confirmation.
The new reference value applies until steps 1-5 are carried out again.
CAUTIONRemember that the TM system must be recalibrated after every tyre change or change in tyre pressure. If no new reference values are stored, the system will not work correctly.
CAUTION- After inflating a tire, always refit the valve cap so that the valve is not damaged by stones, dirt or similar.
- Use only plastic valve caps. Metal valve caps can rust and then be difficult to unscrew.
System and tyre status
The current status of the system and tyres can be checked, see MY CAR.
- Select the MY CAR menu system to open the tyre pressure monitoring menus.
- Select tyre monitoring.
The status is colour-coded for each tyre as follows:
- All green: The system is working normally, and the pressure of all tyres is slightly above the recommended value.
- Yellow wheel: The associated tyre has a pressure that is too low.
- All wheels yellow: At least two tyres have low pressure.
- All wheels grey and message Tyre pressure system currently not activated: The tyre pressure system is temporarily deactivated. It may be necessary to drive the vehicle for a short time at a speed above 30 km/h before the system becomes active again.
- All wheels grey and the message Tyre pressure system service required: A fault has occurred in the system. Contact a Volvo Partner or workshop.
Clearing warnings
If a tyre pressure warning has been displayed and the TM warning light is on:
- Check the air pressure of all tyres with a tyre pressure gauge.
- Inflate the tyre(s) to the pressure according to the tyre pressure label on the driver's side B-pillar (between the front and rear doors).
- Recalibrate the TM system.
To avoid errors, check the pressure when the tyres are cold.
Cold tyres means that the tyres are at the same temperature as the ambient temperature (approx. 3 hours after the last journey). After driving a few kilometres the tyres warm up, causing the pressure to rise.
WARNING- Incorrect tire pressure can cause a tire failure, which may cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
- The system cannot give advance warning of sudden tire damage.
32 Standard equipment in certain markets.
The TM system (Tyre Monitor) of the Volvo S80 (2nd generation) detects low tyre pressure based on tyre rotational speed. It compares the wheels with each other and warns the driver of any deviations. Recalibration is required after a tyre change or pressure change.
Warnings and system status are clearly shown in the display, with colour codes from green to yellow or grey. The system supports safety but does not replace regular pressure checks on cold tyres.
FAQ
When must the TM system be calibrated?
After every tyre change or pressure change, to establish new reference values.
Why is the TM warning light flashing?
This indicates a fault. If the light stays on continuously for one minute, a message is displayed. Visit a workshop.
