Changing a wheel on the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) requires careful procedure. This section explains the steps for safely removing a wheel and the special considerations when using the temporary spare wheel. Particular emphasis is placed on the safe use of the jack and on the warnings to observe during a wheel change. Tips on tool use support practical work.

The vehicle's wheels can be replaced with, e.g.

winter tires.

Temporary spare wheel*

The temporary spare wheel is intended for temporary use only and must be replaced with a regular wheel as soon as possible. Driving characteristics of the vehicle may change when driving with the temporary spare wheel. The temporary spare wheel is smaller than a regular wheel. This reduces the ground clearance of the vehicle.

Watch out for high curbs and do not wash the vehicle in an automatic car wash. If the temporary spare wheel is fitted to the front axle, snow chains cannot be used at the same time.

On vehicles with all-wheel drive, the drive to the rear axle can be switched off. The temporary spare wheel must not be repaired.

The correct tire pressure for the temporary spare wheel is given in the tire pressure table.

IMPORTANT
  • Never drive faster than 80 km/h with a temporary spare wheel fitted to the vehicle.
  • Never drive the vehicle with more than one temporary spare wheel of the "Temporary Spare" type fitted at the same time.

The temporary spare wheel lies outside-face down in the spare wheel well. The temporary spare wheel and foam block are secured by the same continuous bolt.

The foam block contains all tools.

Remove the temporary spare wheel from the compartment under the cargo floor.

  1. Fold up the cargo floor from rear to front.
  2. Unscrew the retaining bolt.
  3. Lift out the foam block with the tools.
  4. Lift out the temporary spare wheel.

Releasing

Set up the warning triangle if a wheel must be changed on a busy road. The vehicle and jack* must stand on a firm, level surface.

  1. Apply the parking brake and engage reverse gear or, on vehicles with automatic transmission, position P.
WARNING

Make sure the jack threads are well lubricated and the jack is neither dirty nor damaged.

CAUTION

Volvo recommends using only the jack* belonging to the specific vehicle model, as shown on the jack label.

The jack also shows the maximum lifting capacity at a specified minimum lifting height.

  1. Lay out the jack*, wheel nut wrench* and the removal tool for the wheel trim covers* and wheel nut plastic caps stored in the foam block. If another jack is used, see Jacking up the vehicle.

Tool for removing the plastic caps from the wheel nuts.

  1. Place wheel chocks in front of and behind the wheels that remain on the ground. For example, use large wooden blocks or large stones.
  2. Vehicles with steel wheels are fitted with removable wheel trim covers.

Hook the removal tool in and pull off any complete wheel trim cover present. Alternatively, the wheel trim covers can be removed by hand.

IMPORTANT

The towing eye must be screwed into the wheel nut wrench with its full thread.

  1. Remove the plastic caps from the wheel nuts with the designated tool.
  2. Loosen the wheel bolts ½–1 turn anticlockwise with the wheel nut wrench.
WARNING

Never place any objects between the ground and the jack or between the jack and the jacking point.

  1. There are two jacking points on each side of the vehicle.

Raise the jack until the flange on the body engages in the groove of the jack head.

IMPORTANT The ground must be firm and level and must not slope.

  1. Raise the vehicle until the wheel is clear of the ground. Remove the wheel bolts and take off the wheel.
WARNING

Never crawl under the vehicle while it is supported on a jack.

Before raising the vehicle with a jack, check that there are no occupants in the vehicle.

If the wheel change takes place in a traffic area, the occupants must move to a safe location.

CAUTION

The vehicle jack is intended only for short, occasional use such as changing a tire in a breakdown or switching between winter and summer tires. Only the jack belonging to the specific vehicle model may be used to lift the vehicle. If the vehicle is to be lifted more often or for longer than for a wheel change, use of a garage floor jack is recommended. Follow the operating instructions supplied with the equipment where applicable.

When changing a wheel on the Volvo S80 (2nd gen), observe clear safety precautions: set up the warning triangle, use the jack only on a firm, level surface, and secure the vehicle against rolling away. The original jack is intended only for emergencies or individual wheel changes.

Special notes apply when using the temporary spare wheel. It may only be used temporarily and must not be repaired. With the temporary spare wheel fitted, do not exceed a speed of 80 km/h.

FAQ

Why not go through a car wash with the temporary spare wheel?
The smaller wheel reduces ground clearance and can cause damage.

How do you position the jack correctly?
At the designated points under the vehicle, so the vehicle is lifted safely.
