Fitting a wheel on the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) must be carried out precisely to ensure safety. This section describes how to tighten the wheel bolts correctly and recommends using a torque wrench. It also gives notes on the warning triangle, correct stowage of the tools and the software update required after a change of tire size. Recommendations for jack maintenance complete the content.

Wheel change - fitting

It is important that the wheel is fitted correctly.

Installation

WARNING

Never crawl under the vehicle while it is supported on a jack.

Before raising the vehicle with a jack, check that there are no occupants in the vehicle.

If the wheel change takes place in a traffic area, the occupants must move to a safe location.

  1. Clean the contact surfaces between the wheel and the hub.
  2. Fit the wheel. Tighten the wheel bolts securely.
  3. Lower the vehicle until the wheels cannot turn.
    Einbau
  4. Tighten the wheel bolts in a crisscross pattern.

It is important that the wheel bolts are tightened properly. Tighten with 140 N·m. Check the tightening torque with a torque wrench.

  5. Refit the plastic caps on the wheel bolts.
  6. If applicable, fit the full wheel trim.
CAUTION
  • After inflating a tire, always refit the valve cap so that the valve is not damaged by stones, dirt or similar.
  • Use only plastic valve caps. Metal valve caps can rust and then be difficult to unscrew.
CAUTION

When fitting the wheel trim, the opening for the valve must be located over the valve on the rim.

When changing to a different tire size

Applies to vehicles with tire pressure monitoring3: When changing to a different tire size, contact a Volvo authorised workshop for a software update.

A software update may be required when changing to a larger or smaller tire size, or when switching between summer and winter wheels.

The warning triangle is secured to the inside of the luggage compartment lid with two clips.

  1. Release the warning triangle cover. To do this, pull the two snap fasteners outward.
  2. Remove the warning triangle from the cover, unfold it and join the two loose sides together.
  3. Unfold the support legs of the warning triangle.

Observe the regulations for using a warning triangle. Place the warning triangle at a position suitable for the traffic situation.

After use, make sure the warning triangle and cover are securely stowed in the luggage compartment.

Jack*

A jack is used to lift the vehicle, for example for a tire change.

Use the original jack only when changing to the spare wheel. The spindle of the jack must always be well lubricated.

CAUTION

The vehicle jack is intended only for short, occasional use such as changing a tire in a breakdown or switching between winter and summer tires. Only the jack belonging to the specific vehicle model may be used to lift the vehicle. If the vehicle is to be lifted more often or for longer than for a wheel change, use of a garage floor jack is recommended. Follow the operating instructions supplied with the equipment where applicable.

Tools - restowing

After use, the tools and jack* must be stowed correctly again. The jack is wound down into the correct position so that it fits.

The foam block and the spare wheel are placed back into the vehicle in reverse order. Note: the upper foam block has an arrow on it. In the vehicle, this arrow must point forward.

IMPORTANT

When not in use, the tools and jack* must be kept in their designated places in the luggage/load compartment of the vehicle.

Fitting a wheel on the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) requires care: the contact surfaces must be clean, and the wheel bolts must be tightened in a crisscross pattern with 140 N·m. Only then is a secure fit ensured. After fitting, refit the plastic caps and, if applicable, the wheel trim.

The warning triangle, tools and jack must also be stowed correctly after use. This keeps the vehicle tidy and all aids are quickly at hand in an emergency.

Volvo places great emphasis on safe and correct fitting for maximum safety when driving.
