Ignition System

What the ignition does

~1min read

For a spark to jump across the electrodes of the spark plug in the combustion chamber, there must be a voltage of at least 30,000 V between the electrodes. The battery supplies only 12 V, so this voltage must be increased many times over. The spark lasts not tenths or hundredths but thousandths of a second. If it fires slightly too early or too late, ignition efficiency and therefore engine power will be reduced.
