Electrode gap

~1min read

The air-fuel mixture and combustion products have a corrosive effect on the metal electrodes of spark plugs. High voltage during spark discharge erodes metal particles, so the electrode gap increases in service. The following electrode gap values are permissible:

4- and 5-cylinder engines: 0.7–0.9 mm
6-cylinder engines: 0.9–1.1 mm
With the three-electrode spark plugs used in the Audi 80, the spark will select the shortest spark gap on its own. Therefore, it is unlikely that the electrode will need to be bent.
