Ignition System

Retarded ignition

~1min read

In other situations, the ignition timing must be shifted toward retarded ignition. In this case, ignition occurs only when the piston has already passed TDC well past. Thus, ignition takes place practically during the exhaust stroke, which improves exhaust gas composition but reduces engine power. Accordingly, retarded ignition is the only correct setting, for example, when the engine is operating in overrun mode (for example, when driving downhill with the accelerator pedal released).
