Airbag

~1min read

As special equipment, the Audi 80 may have an airbag, which can be recognized by a steering wheel of a different shape than usual, with a large energy-absorbing plate. Underneath is an inflatable airbag that deploys in an accident due to the ignition of a small amount of solid propellant. Ignition occurs in a collision at a speed of at least 18 km/h against a rigid barrier, or at a considerably higher speed in a collision between two vehicles. The severity of the impact is registered by the trigger unit located at the front, under the center console. The trigger unit fires the "ignition pellet" in the steering wheel.

Note that the airbag protects only in combination with seat belts and can never replace them. It protects only against head injuries caused by the steering wheel rim.
