Steering Wheel Removal - Models With Airbag

~1min read

Removal of the steering wheel on a vehicle equipped with an airbag is recommended only for an experienced mechanic. Anyone who is not confident in their abilities should consult a workshop.

PROCEDURE

Be sure to observe the safety requirements.

Disconnect the battery cable leading to ground.

Disconnect the airbag unit on the left and right at the rear of the steering wheel using a T30 key.

Lay the airbag unit back.

Disconnect the safety clip of the airbag unit connector.

Disconnect the connector from the airbag unit.

Place the airbag unit so that the Audi rings on the unit are visible.

Remove the upper steering column trim cover.

Disconnect the airbag wiring harness connector from the lower trim cover. Using a screwdriver, carefully press in the locking tab in the middle of the lower part of the connector and pull the connector apart.

Disconnect the electrical connector.

Remove the steering wheel as described for vehicles not equipped with an airbag.

When installing, in addition to the instructions for vehicles without an airbag, note the following: after installing the steering wheel and tightening the bolts by hand, hand-tighten the airbag unit mounting bolt.

Then tighten the right-hand bolt (as viewed from the driver's seat) to 6 N·m.

Finally, tighten the left-hand bolt to 6 N·m.
