Steering

~1min read

To keep steering effort low, all Audi 80 models are equipped with hydraulic power steering, the so-called power steering gear. Additional force is provided by high-pressure hydraulic fluid acting on the toothed rack, which serves as the piston. Turning the steering wheel determines which chamber receives the fluid. This rotation is transmitted to a valve system that controls the direction and volume of fluid flow. Pressure in the hydraulic system is generated by a vane pump driven by the engine via a V-belt or poly-V belt.
