Adjusting the rear wheel bearings

~1min read

Front-wheel drive models
PROCEDURE

Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it.

Remove the wheel cover, cotter pin and castellated nut as described in the Brake System chapter.

Models with rear drum brakes: push the adjuster wedge upward using the method described in the section referred to above. The brake drum will then rotate completely freely.

Tighten the hex nut without excessive force while rotating the wheel, so that the bearings do not seize.

Loosen the nut slightly again.

The play is set correctly if the thrust washer behind the nut can be moved slightly by light pressure from a screwdriver. The screwdriver blade must not rest on the edge of the wheel hub.
