Play in the steering gear can be eliminated by adjustment, provided that wear of the steering rack is still minor.

The arrow indicates the steering gear adjusting bolt, which is located fairly concealed. In the illustration it is visible between the brake booster (1) and the rear wall of the engine compartment (2).

The high-pressure pump (arrow) of the power steering is installed on the 4-cylinder engine at the bottom left, next to the engine.

PROCEDURE

Set the wheels in the straight-ahead position.

Have an assistant gently turn the steering wheel from the center position left and right. A knocking or rattling noise can be heard.

At the same time, slowly and carefully turn the adjusting bolt (illustration on the left) clockwise (tightening) until the noise stops.

Carry out a test drive: the steering must not be stiff or bind in any position. Otherwise, replace the steering gear.
