Exhaust System

Checking the Suspension and Exhaust System Condition

~1min read

The exhaust system is attached to the transmission. Under the vehicle floor, it is secured loosely on rubber mounts.

PROCEDURE

Check the rubber mounts for wear, tears or damage. Replace any torn or damaged mounts.

Check the tightening of the exhaust manifold bolts (35 N·m) and the transmission bracket bolts (25 N·m), but do not apply excessive force.

With the engine running, hold a rag over the exhaust outlet tip(s) of the exhaust system. The engine should stall after a short time.

If you hear hissing sounds and the engine keeps running, the exhaust system is leaking at the point where the sound comes from.

A lower rumbling sound from the exhaust system than normal, and loud bangs during coasting, indicate rusted exhaust pipes.

Mufflers begin to rust at the welded seams (joints). If they are to last a while longer, they should not break when lightly tapped with a screwdriver.
