Removal of Cooling System Hoses

~1min read

Use genuine replacement hoses with the correct curved shape, and always use new clamps.

PROCEDURE

Drain the coolant.

Loosen screw-type clamps using a screwdriver.

Squeeze the spring clamps at both ears with pliers until they stop.

Remove the hoses.

Loosen tightly seated hose ends with a screwdriver inserted between the hose and the connection, carefully using it as a lever.

Push new hoses onto the connections far enough that they cannot slip off.

Tighten screw-type clamps without excessive force, otherwise the thread may be stripped.

Tip: a torn or punctured hose can rarely be replaced immediately. For example, the required hose is often not in stock. As a temporary repair, "Pannenband" by Weyer or "Hoseweld Bandage" by Holts can be used. Both tapes adhere well to cleaned and dry rubber hoses. In the case of a large leak, it can sometimes help to open the expansion tank cap by one turn so that pressure cannot build up in the cooling system, which the bandage could not withstand. Now you can drive very carefully to the workshop, constantly monitoring the temperature and coolant level indicators.
