Removal of Water Pump

~2min read

You will need either a new sealing gasket (4- and 6-cylinder engines) or a new O-ring (5-cylinder engine).

When purchasing a new water pump for a 4-cylinder engine, the vehicle owner receives the pump assembly with housing (rear part of the housing with the pump). Pumps for the 5-cylinder engine can be recognized by the stamped number 5 in the area of the flange sealing gasket; they must be equipped with an O-ring with a 5 mm allowance in diameter.

PROCEDURE

When working on the 4-cylinder engine, first remove the V-ribbed belt.

Remove the timing belt cover (refer to Engine chapter).

Loosen a total of seven screws between the front bearing housing and the water pump housing. The pump impeller is located in the bearing housing.

Replace the gasket between the bearing housing and the water pump housing.

When the entire water pump housing is removed (using a replacement part), the gasket between the housing and the cylinder block must also be replaced during installation.

Tighten the bearing housing to 10 N·m, and tighten the V-belt pulley clamping bolts to 25 N·m.

Removing the water pump on the 5-cylinder engine is not a simple job:
First, remove the power steering pump together with the V-ribbed belt.

Remove the timing belt cover (refer to Engine chapter).

Loosen the timing belt and remove it from the water pump sprocket.

Unscrew the water pump clamping bolts and remove the pump.

Install a new pump with a new O-ring.

Tighten the water pump clamping bolts to 20 N·m.

Install the timing belt, and be sure to check the valve timing (refer to Engine chapter).

Tension the timing belt.

The remaining assembly is straightforward.

When working on the 6-cylinder engine, removing the water pump yourself requires removing the timing belt again.

Remove the poly-V belt (refer to Alternator chapter).

Remove the timing belt (refer to Engine chapter).

Loosen the nine bolts on the front of the water pump housing and remove the housing.
When installing, replace the gasket. Tighten the bolts in two stages, the final torque being 10 N·m.

Install the timing belt and be sure to check the valve timing (refer to the Engines chapter).
