Coolant
The cooling system does not contain pure water but a mixture of antifreeze, which includes anti-freeze and anti-corrosion additives, and distilled water. Therefore, it is better to refer to it as coolant. The mixing ratio is 2:3 for European conditions and 1:1 for northern countries.
| Engine | Antifreeze Protection Down To | Water | Antifreeze | |||
| 4-cylinder | –25 °C | –35 °C | 4.2 L | 3.5 L | 2.8 L | 3.5 L |
| 5-cylinder | –25 °C | –35 °C | 4.8 L | 4 L | 3.2 L | 4 L |
| 6-cylinder | –25 °C | –35 °C | 4.4 L | 5.5 L | 6.6 L | 5.5 L |
Corrosion protection is just as important as frost protection. It prevents scale, rust and other corrosion products from forming in the cooling system. Therefore, the coolant with corrosion protection filled at the workshop should not be drained in spring; it should remain in the cooling system all year round. Audi workshops use their own antifreeze, "G 11 V8 B". The manufacturer also permits other products marked "according to TL VW 774 B".
