Park Distance Control (PDC)*

~2min read

The PDC system assists you when parking in reverse. It uses an audible signal to warn you of the actual distance to an obstacle. Four ultrasonic sensors in the rear bumper measure the distance to the nearest object. For the two corner sensors, the measuring range is up to 60 cm from the bumper. The range of the two center sensors is up to 1.5 m.

The system activates automatically approximately one second after reverse gear is engaged or the automatic transmission selector lever is moved to position R, if the ignition key is in position 2. If you disengage reverse gear, the PDC system also switches off. If you are towing a trailer, the system cannot perform its function and is therefore switched off.

Audible signals

When the distance to an object behind the vehicle decreases to a critical level, an intermittent audible signal sounds. As the distance decreases, the signal frequency increases. When the distance to the obstacle is less than 30 cm, the sound becomes continuous.

The signals stop after three seconds if the distance to the obstacle does not decrease while the vehicle is moving (for example, parallel to a wall).

A continuous high-pitched signal that sounds when the system is first switched on indicates a malfunction. In this case, have the system checked at a BMW service center.

The PDC system does not relieve the driver of responsibility for judging distances to obstacles. Objects located in the dead zone of the sensors are not detected and do not trigger the warning. Object detection may also be limited by the physical capabilities of ultrasonic measurement, for example with the trailer drawbar and hitch, thin objects, and glossy painted surfaces.

To keep the sensors fully functional, keep them clean and remove ice from them.

Do not direct jets of steam at the sensors for extended periods (the distance must not be less than 10 m).
