Catalytic Converter

~1min read

The catalytic converter reduces exhaust emissions toxicity.

Only unleaded gasoline should be used.

Even a small amount of tetraethyl lead is enough to completely destroy the oxygen sensor and catalytic converter.

To avoid possible damage and ensure uninterrupted engine operation, observe the following rules.

Be sure to carry out all specified maintenance work.

Refuel the tank in a timely manner.

If the engine begins to misfire, stop the engine immediately.

Engines may only be started by towing when cold. Otherwise, unburned fuel will enter the catalytic converter. It is better to use jumper cables to start the engine.

Avoid other situations in which fuel burns incompletely or does not burn at all, such as frequent or prolonged use of the starter with short intervals between engagements, repeated unsuccessful attempts to start the engine (this does not refer to starting or stopping a fully serviceable engine), or running the engine with the spark plug connector removed.

Be sure to observe the above recommendations, otherwise unburned fuel will enter the catalytic converter. This may cause overheating and damage to the catalytic converter.

The catalytic converter reaches high temperatures during operation, regardless of the vehicle it is installed on. Heat shields fitted in the exhaust system area must not be removed or coated with anti-corrosion compound. Make sure that during driving, engine idling, or when parked, hot exhaust system components are not in dangerous proximity to flammable materials (grass, leaves, straw, etc.). Otherwise there is a risk of ignition, which may result in serious injury to persons and significant property damage.
