Automatic Transmission Positions
Park (P)
In this position the transmission is locked and prevents the wheels from turning. In this position the engine can be started using the gear selector.
The electric parking brake may apply if:
- You shift into Park (P) on a slope.
- You shift into Park (P) without the brake pedal fully depressed.
Reverse (R)
This position allows your vehicle to move backward. Come to a complete stop before shifting into and out of Reverse (R).
Neutral (N)
This position allows your vehicle to roll freely. Keep the brake pedal depressed when in this position.
In this position the engine can be started using the gear selector.
Drive (D)
This is the normal driving position and allows your vehicle to move forward.
Low (L)
This mode is designed for driving on steep slopes. The transmission will hold a low gear to provide maximum torque when driving uphill and maximum engine braking when going downhill. You can enter this mode at any vehicle speed.
