Exhaust Gas Precautions when Starting and Driving
1. Do not breathe exhaust gas, which contains carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause loss of consciousness or death by asphyxiation.
2. If you smell carbon monoxide inside the vehicle, open all windows fully and close the tailgate. Find and correct the cause immediately.
3. Periodically check the exhaust system for openings and leaks, especially if you hear a change in exhaust sound or if something has struck the exhaust system.
4. Do not race the engine in a garage or enclosed area any longer than necessary to start the engine and drive out of the garage.
A high concentration of exhaust gas can create a very dangerous situation.
5. Avoid running the engine at idle for extended periods when people are in the vehicle. If this is unavoidable, park in an open area and set the heating or cooling system to draw outside air into the vehicle.
6. To ensure proper operation of the ventilation system, make sure the air intakes in front of the windshield are not blocked by snow, ice, leaves, or other foreign objects.
7. Keep the tailgate closed while the vehicle is moving. A tailgate that is not fully closed may allow exhaust gas to be drawn into the vehicle. If you must drive with the tailgate open (to carry a large object inside), close the windows, open the instrument panel vents, and set the heating and cooling system to bring in fresh air by turning the fan to high speed and setting the air intake control lever to "Fresh" (minivan, van).
