Brake Pedal
Excessive use of the brake may reduce brake system efficiency, resulting in reduced braking performance and premature wear of brake pads.
When descending a long slope or climbing a steep hill, use engine braking by shifting the transmission to "2" (SECOND) or "L" (LOW).
CAUTION:
Important: Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal when braking is not required. This may cause abnormally high brake system temperature, excessive pad wear, and possible brake damage.
Brake System Operating Instructions
CAUTION:
Never carry items on top of the cargo area cover behind the rear seat.
In an accident or sudden stop, such items may move forward and cause vehicle damage or passenger injury.
• After parking, always check the following:
The parking brake must be released and the parking brake indicator must be off before driving away.
• Driving through water may cause the brakes to get wet. Brakes also get wet when the vehicle is washed.
The vehicle may not stop if the brakes are wet, and the vehicle may pull to one side. To dry the brakes, lightly apply the brake system until braking performance returns to normal, while keeping full control of the vehicle.
If braking performance does not return to normal, stop the vehicle as soon as possible and contact a Hyundai dealer for assistance.
• Never coast down a slope with the clutch disengaged (neutral). This is extremely dangerous. Keep the vehicle in gear at all times. Use the brakes to reduce speed, then shift to a lower gear so engine braking helps maintain a safe speed.
• Never "ride the brakes."
Keeping your foot on the brake pedal while driving is dangerous, as it may cause the brake system to overheat and lose effectiveness. It also increases wear on brake system components.
• If a tire goes flat while driving, apply the brake system smoothly and keep the vehicle moving straight while reducing speed. Once you are traveling at a sufficiently low and safe speed, leave the road and stop in a safe place.
• If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, do not allow the vehicle to creep forward slowly. To prevent this, keep your foot on the brake pedal while the vehicle is stopped.
• Be careful when parking on a hill. Apply the parking brake and place the shift lever in "P" (automatic transmission) or in first gear or reverse (manual transmission). If the vehicle is facing downhill, turn the front wheels away from the curb so the vehicle will not roll. If there is no curb, or if you need to prevent rolling under other conditions, block the wheels.
• Under some conditions, the parking brake may freeze in the applied position. This most often occurs when snow or ice accumulates around or near the rear brakes, or when the brakes get wet. If there is a risk of the parking brake freezing, apply it only temporarily while placing the shift lever in "P" (automatic transmission) or in first gear or reverse (manual transmission), and block the rear wheels so the vehicle cannot roll. This will release the parking brake.
