Manual Transmission

MANUAL TRANSMISSION
The shift pattern is shown on the gear shift lever knob.
Always fully depress the clutch pedal before attempting to move the shift lever.
To shift into Reverse from 5th gear, move the shift lever to the Neutral position, then move it to the Reverse position.
• In cold weather, gear shifting may be difficult until the transmission fluid warms up. This is normal and does not damage the transmission.
• If you have stopped and it is difficult to shift into 1st gear or Reverse (R), move the shift lever to Neutral (N) and release the clutch pedal.
Depress the clutch pedal again, then shift into 1st gear or Reverse (R).
• While driving, do not rest your hand on the shift lever, as this may cause premature wear of the shift forks.
CAUTION:
Do not shift the lever into Reverse (R) while the vehicle is moving forward, as this will damage the transmission.
Using the Clutch
Before shifting gears, fully depress the clutch pedal to the floor, then release it slowly. Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving, as this may cause excessive wear.
Do not partially engage the clutch to hold the vehicle on a slope. This causes excessive wear.
To hold the vehicle on a slope, use the parking brake.
Do not depress the clutch pedal quickly and repeatedly.
Driving Instructions
• When driving down a slope, do not shift to Neutral and coast. This is extremely dangerous. Always keep the clutch engaged.
• Do not "ride the brakes". This may cause them to overheat and fail.
When driving down a long slope, reduce speed and shift to a lower gear. Engine braking will then help slow the vehicle.
• Reduce speed before shifting to a lower gear. This helps avoid engine overrev that may cause damage.
• Reduce speed in crosswinds. This will allow you to control the vehicle much better.
• Before attempting to shift into Reverse, make sure the vehicle is completely stopped, otherwise the transmission may be damaged. To shift into Reverse, depress the clutch, move the shift lever to Neutral, wait three seconds, then move the lever to the Reverse position.
• Exercise extreme caution when driving on slippery surfaces.
Be especially careful when braking, accelerating, or shifting gears. On slippery surfaces, a sudden change in engine speed may cause the drive wheels to lose traction with the road and the vehicle may go out of control.
CAUTION:
• The risk of vehicle rollover increases sharply if you lose control of the vehicle at high speed.
• Loss of control often occurs when two or more wheels leave the road and the driver turns the steering wheel too sharply to return to the road.
• If the vehicle leaves the road, do not turn the steering wheel sharply.
Reduce speed before returning to the traffic lane.
• In a collision, an unbelted person has a much lower chance of survival than a person wearing a seat belt.

Gear Shifting
Always shift gears according to the appropriate vehicle speed.
Proper gear shifting saves fuel and extends engine service life.
Avoid downshifting at very high speed, as this may damage the engine.
