Engine Starting

1. Apply the parking brake.

2. If the Hyundai vehicle has a manual transmission, shift the gear selector to "Neutral" and fully depress the clutch pedal. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, shift the gear selector to "P" (Park).

3. On vehicles equipped with a diesel glow plug indicator light, turn the ignition key to the "ON" position. The diesel glow plug indicator light will first illuminate amber, and after a short time the amber light will turn off, indicating that preheating is complete.

If the engine does not start within 10 seconds after preheating is complete, turn the ignition key back to the "LOCK" position and then to the "ON" position to repeat preheating.

4. Depress the accelerator pedal as shown in the illustration, depending on the air temperature and/or engine condition.

a) When the air temperature is moderate or the engine is warm:

b) Start the engine while depressing the accelerator pedal.

c) When the air temperature is low and the engine is cold:

d) Start the engine while depressing the accelerator pedal. If the air temperature is very low, turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position for one or two seconds before attempting to start the engine; this will make starting easier.

5. Start the engine.
