Limited-Slip Differential (if equipped)
If the vehicle is equipped with a limited-slip differential, it is for the rear wheels only. The characteristics of this limited-slip differential are as follows:
Like a conventional differential, when the vehicle turns, one wheel can rotate at a speed different from the other wheel. The difference between a limited-slip differential and a conventional differential is that if one wheel loses traction, a greater amount of torque is applied to the rear wheel on the other side to improve traction.
When stationary, the limited-slip differential engages when the torque difference between the right rear wheel and the left rear wheel is from 5 kgf·m to 9 kgf·m.
To confirm that the limited-slip differential is functioning properly, you can perform the following procedure:
1. Position the vehicle so that one wheel is on dry paved surface and the other is on ice, snow, mud, etc. Drive the vehicle and observe the action of the limited-slip differential. If the differential is working properly, the vehicle should not get stuck.
2. Gently press the accelerator pedal and, if traction is good, press it fully. If the vehicle accelerates well, the differential is working normally.
CAUTION:
1. Never start the engine when one of the rear wheels is raised and the other is touching the ground; this may cause the vehicle to lurch forward.
2. If one of the rear wheels starts spinning rapidly in mud, snow, etc., the vehicle may sometimes move out if the accelerator pedal is pressed further; however, avoid running the engine continuously at high speed, as this may damage the limited-slip differential.
