Starting and Operation

In Cold Weather

~4min read

Engine oil At low temperatures, engine oil may thicken considerably, making it difficult to start the engine.

Before starting in cold weather, replace the oil with a lower-viscosity oil designed specifically for winter use. For the appropriate oil viscosity, refer to the "Consumer Information" section.

Engine Coolant

If the temperature in your area drops below freezing, the coolant in the engine or radiator may freeze and cause serious damage to the engine and/or radiator. Be sure to add a sufficient amount of antifreeze to the coolant to prevent freezing.

The factory-fill engine coolant is expected to remain in the cooling system and provide freeze protection at low temperatures:

approximately -30 ºC (-20 ºF). Before starting in cold weather, check the concentration and add antifreeze if necessary.

Battery

Battery capacity decreases at low temperatures.

This is an unavoidable result of its chemical and physical properties. Therefore, a very cold battery, especially one that is not fully charged, will deliver only part of the starting current available under normal conditions.

It is recommended that you have the battery checked by an authorized Hyundai dealer before starting in cold weather and charge it if necessary.

A fully charged battery not only ensures reliable starting but also extends battery service life.

Windshield Washer Fluid

To ensure proper operation of the windshield or rear window washer at low temperatures, add antifreeze to the washer fluid at a ratio of one part antifreeze to one part water.

Windshield Wiper Blades

Before operating the wipers, check the wiper blades. Make sure they are not frozen to the windshield or rear window glass. If the blades are frozen to the windshield or rear window, do not turn on the wipers until the ice has melted and the blades are free.

Ventilation Slots

The ventilation openings in the headlamp housing on the passenger side must be carefully cleaned with a brush after heavy snowfall so that the heating and ventilation systems continue to function properly.

Preventing Locks from Freezing

To prevent the locks from freezing, spray an approved anti-icing fluid or glycerin into the key slot. If a lock is covered with ice, spray it with an approved de-icing fluid to remove the ice. If a lock is frozen from the inside, you may thaw it using a heated key. Handle a heated key carefully to avoid burning your fingers.

The appropriate temperature range for using the immobilizer key is -40 ºC to 80 ºC. If you heat the immobilizer key above 80 ºC, the transponder in the key head may be damaged.

Door Locks

To prevent the door locks from freezing, cover the lock cylinders with tape when washing the vehicle to keep cold water from getting in.

Parking Brake

If the air temperature is below freezing, park the vehicle with the shift lever in 1st gear or Reverse, and do not apply the parking brake. If the parking brake is applied and there is moisture on the brake linings, the linings may freeze to the drums and it will be impossible to release the parking brake.

When parking on a steep slope, turn the front wheels toward the curb and use the wheel chocks.

Washing the Vehicle

Salt and other chemicals spread on roads in winter in some areas can have a harmful effect on the vehicle body. Wash the vehicle as often as possible in accordance with the care instructions in this manual. Before and after the cold season, apply a preventive agent and an underbody protective coating approved by an authorized Hyundai dealer.

Weatherstrip (Door Seal)

To prevent the weatherstrips on the doors, roof, etc. from freezing, apply silicone grease to them.

Winter Tires

Winter tires are recommended for driving on snow and ice.

To maintain stable handling, install winter tires of the same size and with the same tread pattern on all four wheels.

Winter tires worn more than 50 % are not suitable for use as winter tires.

Do not use winter tires that do not meet the performance requirements.

Rules and laws regarding winter tires (speed limits, required use, type, etc.) vary.

Study and observe the laws and requirements in your country.

Snow Chains

If you need to use tire chains, make sure they are installed on the rear wheels.

Use only tire chains designed for the tires installed on your vehicle; using chains of the wrong size or type may damage the vehicle body.

Before driving on long stretches of road without snow, remove the chains to avoid damaging the tires.

Rules and laws regarding tire chains vary. Study and observe the laws and requirements in your country.
