Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

The Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IATS) is built into the Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor. The sensor detects the temperature of the intake air. Air temperature correction is necessary for accurate calculation of the air volume because air density depends on temperature. Therefore, the ECM uses both the MAPS signal and the IATS signal. This sensor is a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistor, and its resistance changes inversely proportional to temperature.
