Knock Sensor (KS) Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

Knock is a phenomenon characterized by undesirable vibration and noise, and it may cause engine damage. The Knock Sensor (KS) is installed on the cylinder block and detects engine knock. When knock occurs, the cylinder block vibration is transmitted as pressure to the piezoelectric element. When knock is detected, the sensor generates a voltage signal. The ECM retards the ignition timing when knock occurs. If the knock disappears after the ignition timing is retarded, the ECM advances the ignition timing gradually. This sequential control can improve engine power, torque, and fuel economy.
