Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

The Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAPS) is a speed-density type sensor and is installed on the surge tank. It measures the absolute pressure of the surge tank and sends an analog signal proportional to the pressure to the ECM. Using this signal, the ECM calculates the intake air volume and engine speed. The MAPS consists of a piezoelectric element and a hybrid IC that amplifies the output signal of the element. The element is a silicon diaphragm and has a pressure-sensitive variable resistor effect of the semiconductor. Because a vacuum of 100% and the intake manifold pressure are applied to both sides of the sensor respectively, this sensor can output an analog signal proportional to the pressure using the change of the silicon resistance.
