Parking brake

Applying the Parking Brake
To engage the parking brake, first depress the brake pedal, then press the release button inward without pressing it down, and pull the parking brake lever up as far as it will go.
In addition, when parking the vehicle on a slope, it is recommended to place the gear shift lever in the lowest possible gear for vehicles with a manual transmission, or in P (Park) for vehicles with an automatic transmission.
CAUTION- Driving with the parking brake applied will cause excessive wear of the brake shoes (pads) or linings and of the brake drum (disc).
- Do not use the parking brake while the vehicle is moving, except in an emergency. This may damage the vehicle's systems and create a hazard while driving.
Releasing the Parking Brake

To release the parking brake, first depress the brake pedal and pull the parking brake lever up slightly. Then press the release button (1) and lower the parking brake lever (2) while holding the button pressed.
If the parking brake pedal does not release, or releases through its full travel, have the brake system inspected immediately by an authorized Kia dealer.
WARNING- To prevent the vehicle from moving unexpectedly when it is parked or when passengers are getting out, do not use the gear shift lever in place of the parking brake. Apply the parking brake AND make sure the gear shift lever is securely placed in 1st gear (First) or R (Reverse) for vehicles with a manual transmission, or in P (Park) for vehicles with an automatic transmission.
- Do not allow persons unfamiliar with the vehicle or children to touch the parking brake. If the parking brake is released accidentally, serious injury may result.
- Whenever the vehicle is parked, always apply the parking brake to prevent unexpected movement that could injure passengers or pedestrians.

You can check the brake warning light by turning the ignition switch to the ON position (do not start the engine). With the ignition switch in the START or ON position and the parking brake applied, this warning light will illuminate.
Before driving, make sure the parking brake is fully released and the brake warning light is off.
If the warning light remains on after releasing the parking brake with the engine running, this may indicate a fault in the brake system. Have it inspected immediately.
If possible, stop driving immediately. If this is not possible, drive with extreme caution and continue only until you reach a safe location or a workshop.
