Power brakes
The vehicle is equipped with power brakes, which adjust automatically during normal use.
If the brakes lose power assistance because the engine has stopped or for another reason, the vehicle can still be stopped by pressing the brake pedal harder than usual. However, the braking distance will be longer.
When the engine is off, each time the brake pedal is depressed, the reserve brake assist power is partially reduced. When brake assistance has been lost, do not pump the brake pedal repeatedly.
This should only be done when necessary to maintain control of the vehicle while driving on slippery surfaces.
WARNING - Brakes- Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal. This will raise brake temperatures to abnormal levels, cause excessive wear of the brake shoe linings and brake pads, and increase the braking distance.
- When driving down a long or steep hill, downshift to a lower gear and avoid continuous use of the brakes. Continuous brake application will overheat the brakes and may cause a temporary loss of braking effectiveness.
- Wet brakes may cause the vehicle to slow down more slowly than usual and to pull to one side when the brake pedal is pressed. A light brake application will reveal whether the brakes have become wet. Always perform this brake check after driving through deep water.
To dry the brakes, lightly depress the brake pedal while maintaining a safe forward speed until braking effectiveness returns to normal.
- Always check the positions of the brake and accelerator pedals before driving.
If you do not check the positions of the brake and accelerator pedals before driving, you may press the accelerator pedal instead of the brake. This may cause a serious accident.
Brake failure
If the main brakes fail while the vehicle is in motion, the vehicle can be stopped in an emergency using the parking brake. However, the braking distance will be considerably longer than usual.
WARNING - Parking brake Applying the parking brake while the vehicle is moving at normal speed may cause a sudden loss of vehicle control. If the parking brake must be used to stop the vehicle, apply it with extreme caution.Brake disc wear indicator
The vehicle is equipped with disc brakes.
When the brake pads are worn and need to be replaced, a high-pitched warning sound may be heard from the front or rear brakes (if equipped). This sound may come and go, or it may occur every time the brake pedal is depressed.
Note that certain road or climate conditions may cause the brakes to squeal when they are first applied (or when the brake pedal is lightly depressed). This is a normal condition and does not indicate a brake problem.
CAUTION- To avoid costly brake repairs, do not continue driving with worn brake pads.
- Brake pads should always be replaced in complete sets, for either the front or rear axle.
Rear drum brakes (if equipped)
Rear drum brakes do not have wear indicators. However, inspect the rear drum brake linings if you hear brake squeal. Also inspect the rear drum brakes whenever tires are replaced or rotated, and when the front brakes are replaced.
