Good Driving Habits

~2min read

  • Never place the gear shift lever in Neutral and coast down a hill. This is extremely dangerous. The vehicle should always be in gear.
  • Do not drive with the brake pedal depressed. This causes the brakes to overheat and fail. Instead, when driving down a long hill, reduce speed and downshift to a lower gear. Once you have done this, engine braking will limit the vehicle speed.
  • Reduce speed before downshifting. This helps prevent exceeding the engine's maximum permitted speed (rpm), which could damage the engine.
  • If there is a crosswind, reduce speed. This will allow you to maintain much better control of the vehicle.
  • Before shifting the gear shift lever into Reverse, make sure the vehicle is completely stopped.

If it is not, the transmission may be damaged.

  • Exercise special caution when driving on slippery surfaces. Be especially careful when braking, accelerating, or shifting gears. A sudden change in vehicle speed on a slippery surface may cause the drive wheels to lose traction and the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
  • WARNING
    • Always wear your seat belt! In an accident, a passenger who is not wearing a seat belt is more likely to be seriously injured or killed than a passenger who is properly belted.
    • Avoid high speeds when cornering or turning.
    • Do not make sudden steering movements, such as during a sudden lane change or a quick, sharp turn.
    • If the driver loses control of the vehicle while driving at high speed, the risk of rollover increases significantly.
    • Loss of vehicle control often occurs when two or more wheels lose contact with the road surface and the driver steers too sharply to get back onto the road.
    • If the vehicle leaves the road, do not make sharp maneuvers. Instead, reduce speed before returning to the road.
    • Never exceed the posted speed limits.
