Manual transmission operation

~3min read

The manual transmission has 5 forward gears.

The shift pattern is embossed on the gear shift knob.

The transmission is fully synchronized for all forward gears to make shifting up or down easier.

When shifting gears, fully depress the clutch pedal, then release it slowly.

If your vehicle is equipped with an ignition interlock switch, the engine cannot be started without depressing the clutch pedal. (if equipped) Before moving the lever to R (reverse), it must be placed in neutral.

Press the button located directly below the gear shift lever button and pull the lever far enough to the left, then move it to the reverse (R) position. (if equipped) Before shifting into R (Reverse), make sure the vehicle has come to a complete stop.

Do not allow the tachometer needle (rpm) to enter the red zone.

CAUTION
  • When shifting from fifth to fourth gear, take care not to accidentally push the gear shift lever sideways so that it engages second gear. Such a drastic downshift may raise engine speed so much that the tachometer enters the red zone. Over-revving the engine may damage it.
  • Do not downshift by more than 2 gears. Also do not downshift when the engine is running at high speed (5,000 rpm or higher). Such downshifting may damage the engine, clutch and transaxle.
  • When driving in low temperatures, shifting may be difficult until the transmission oil warms up.

This is a normal phenomenon and is harmless to the transmission.

  • If the vehicle has stopped and shifting into first or R (reverse) is difficult, place the gear shift lever in N (neutral) and release the clutch.
  • Press the clutch pedal again, then engage first or R (reverse) gear. CAUTION
    • To avoid premature clutch wear and damage, do not drive with your foot resting on the clutch pedal. Also do not use the clutch to hold the vehicle in place when stopped on a slope, e.g. while waiting at traffic lights.
    • Do not rest your hand on the gear shift lever while driving, as this may cause premature wear of the shift fork mechanism in the transmission.
WARNING Before leaving the driver's seat, always fully apply the parking brake and turn off the engine. When the vehicle is parked on level ground or on a slope, make sure the transmission is in first gear. If the vehicle is parked facing downhill, the transmission should be in R (reverse).

If the above precautions are not observed in the situations listed, the vehicle may move unexpectedly and suddenly.

    Using the Clutch

Before shifting gears, fully depress the clutch pedal, then release it slowly.

While driving, keep the clutch pedal fully released. Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving, as this may cause unnecessary wear. Do not partially engage the clutch to hold the vehicle in place on a slope, as this causes unnecessary wear. To hold the vehicle on an incline, use the brake pedal or the parking brake. Do not operate the clutch pedal abruptly or repeatedly.

CAUTION Depress the clutch pedal fully. If it is not fully depressed, it may damage the clutch or cause noise.

    Downshifting

If the vehicle speed must be reduced in heavy traffic or when climbing a steep hill, downshift before the engine starts to labor. Downshifting reduces the risk of the engine stalling and allows better acceleration when more speed is needed again. When driving down a steep hill, downshifting helps maintain a safe speed and extends brake life.
