Rear Drum Brake Shoes
Replacement
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the brake drums.
2. Clean the brake backing plate and drums.
3. Note the position of the rear and front shoes, springs and the brake shoe-to-drum clearance adjuster.

4. Remove the shoe hold-down springs: press the cup and turn it 90°.
5. Remove the springs, cups and pins from the back of the brake backing plate.

6. Carefully pull the shoe assembly toward you and remove it together with the adjuster and parking brake cable.
7. Disconnect the upper and lower shoe return springs.
8. If necessary, secure the wheel cylinder with wire so the pistons do not come out. If there are signs of fluid leakage on the cylinder, replace or repair it.

9. Disconnect the adjuster and spring from the front shoe.

10. Disconnect the adjuster and spring from the rear shoe.

11. Remove the adjuster lever from the front shoe.

12. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the lever.

13. Remove the lock washer.
14. Remove the lever pivot and remove the lever from the rear shoe.
15. Secure the parking brake lever to the new shoe with the lock washer.
Warning: The parking brake operating levers for the left and right wheels are different.
16. Apply a thin coat of special grease to the contact surfaces between the backing plate and the shoes.

17. Install the shoe on the backing plate and connect the parking brake cable to the lever, first making sure the lever spring is oriented correctly. Secure the shoe by installing the pin and spring and turning the cup.

18. Make sure the upper end of the shoe engages the slot in the end of the piston protruding from the cylinder.

19. Connect the adjuster spring to the upper part of the rear shoe, hooking the spring on the side of the shoe facing the backing plate.

20. Install the lower return spring on the rear shoe, hooking the spring on the side of the shoe facing outward.

21. Install the front shoe and hook the adjuster spring onto the pin on the back of the shoe. Install the lower return spring on the front shoe.
22. Shorten the shoe strut by turning the toothed nut.
23. Apply special grease to the contact surfaces of the strut, parking brake levers and adjuster.

24. Install the adjuster, seating it in the corresponding slots in the shoes.

25. Check that the adjuster is installed correctly.

26. Install the front shoe in place and secure it with the pin and spring, then turn the cup. The upper part of the shoe must engage the wheel cylinder slot, and the lower part must rest against the backing plate stop.

27. Install the adjuster lever on the rear shoe so that the lever engages the pivot and the toothed nut.

28. Install the upper tension spring. Hook the long end into the hole in the adjuster lever and the short end onto the pin on the front shoe.
29. Check that all parts are installed correctly.
30. Turn the toothed nut to bring the shoes together so the drum can be installed.
31. Repeat the above procedure on the brake for the other wheel and install the drums.
32. Before driving, check the brake operation.
