Gasoline Engines - Removal and Overhaul

Engine Overhaul Alternatives

~1min read

When performing an engine overhaul yourself, several options are available. The decision to replace the cylinder block, piston-connecting rod assembly and crankshaft depends on a number of factors, the most important of which is the condition of the cylinder block. Other considerations include the cost of repairs, access to workshop equipment, availability of parts, the time planned for the work and personal experience.
Some of the overhaul options are listed below.

Purchasing Individual Parts
If inspection shows that the cylinder block and most components are in satisfactory condition and can continue to be used, purchasing individual parts is the most cost-effective option.
The cylinder block, piston-connecting rod assembly and crankshaft must be inspected especially carefully. Even if minor cylinder block wear is found, the cylinders must be honed.

Short Block Assembly
A short block assembly consists of a cylinder block with the crankshaft and piston assemblies already installed. All mating components are matched by size group, and all clearances conform to specifications. The camshaft, valve train, cylinder head and ancillary components are installed separately on the block, as they are not included in this overhaul kit. Machining costs are minimal or not required at all.

Remanufactured Engine (Complete Long Block)
The remanufactured engine supplied as a service part includes the complete short block assembly, plus the oil pump, oil pan, cylinder head, cylinder head cover, camshaft, valve train, camshaft drive gears, timing belt and belt covers. All components are fitted with new bearings, seals and gaskets. Only the intake and exhaust manifolds and the ancillary components are to be installed on the assembly.
Carefully consider which option best suits your needs. Before purchasing or ordering service parts, consult a local automotive repair shop, parts suppliers, and engine rebuild specialists.
