Starting the Engine After Repair and Break-In
* Keep a fire extinguisher ready before starting the engine for the first time.
PROCEDURE
1. After engine assembly is complete, check the engine oil and coolant levels twice.
2. With the spark plugs removed and the ignition system and fuel pump disabled, crank the crankshaft until the oil pressure sensor registers pressure, or until the oil pressure warning lamp goes out.
3. Install the spark plugs, connect the spark plug cables and enable the ignition system and fuel pump.
4. Start the engine. The engine should start immediately, or after a short time needed for fuel system pressure to build up.
5. After starting, warm up the engine to operating temperature. As the engine warms up, carefully watch for oil or coolant leaks.
6. Stop the engine and check the oil and coolant levels.
7. Drive the vehicle in an area with light traffic. Accelerate from 50 km/h to 90 km/h, then release the accelerator pedal and decelerate with engine braking to 50 km/h. Repeat this cycle 10–12 times. This allows the piston rings to seat against the cylinder walls. Check the oil and coolant levels again.
8. Drive the vehicle 900 km without placing heavy loads on the engine (drive at low speed), checking the oil level periodically. Increased oil consumption is possible during the break-in period.
9. After 900–1100 km, replace the engine oil and oil filter.
10. For the next several hundred kilometers, drive the vehicle in normal mode, avoiding excessively high and excessively low loads.
11. After 3600 km, replace the engine oil and oil filter again. The engine is then considered broken in.
