Exhaust System Condition Inspection
Inspect the exhaust system rubber mounts for cracks.
PROCEDURE
1. Perform the inspection with the engine cold. It is best to do this before the first trip of the day, or at least three hours after the engine has been switched off. Check the condition of the entire exhaust system, from the engine to the tailpipe outlet. Ideally, carry out this inspection with the vehicle raised on a lift, so that there is free access from below. If a lift is not available, raise the vehicle with a jack and securely support it on stands.
2. Check the pipes and pipe connections for signs of leaks, heavy corrosion and damage. Check the condition and security of all system brackets and hangers.
3. At the same time, inspect the underbody for holes, corrosion, separated seams and other defects that could allow exhaust gases to enter the passenger compartment. Seal all openings with a suitable sealant.
4. The exhaust system, especially its mountings and hangers, is often the source of rattling and other unpleasant noises. Rock and pull the pipes, mufflers and catalytic converter (if fitted). If these components contact body parts or suspension components, replace the exhaust system mounting hardware.
5. Inspecting the inside of the exhaust pipe shows the current operating condition of the engine. The deposits in the pipe indicate the quality of engine tuning. If the inside of the pipe is black and sooty, carefully check the fuel system.
