Power Steering Fluid Level Check
PROCEDURE
1. Check the power steering fluid level periodically to avoid steering problems, such as damage to the power steering pump. Proceed as follows.
CAUTION
Do not hold the steering wheel at full lock in either direction for more than five seconds. This may damage the power steering pump.2. The power steering fluid reservoir is located in the engine compartment and has a screw-off cap with an integrated dipstick.
3. Park the vehicle on level ground and apply the parking brake.
The fluid level may be checked cold or warm (starting at +50°C). The cold check is described here. Note
CAUTION
to the notes at the end of this section if the fluid level must be checked with the engine warm.4. The vehicle must not be warm and the engine must not be running. Front wheels must be in the straight-ahead position.
5. Unscrew the reservoir cap with a screwdriver (arrow in the illustration). To do this, insert the screwdriver blade into the slot in the cap.
6. Wipe the level indicator under the cap with a clean cloth.

7. Screw the cap in by hand and unscrew it again. The fluid level on the indicator must be within 2 mm above or below the MIN mark.
CAUTION
As a rule, the fluid level should not drop. If the level drops, the leak must be repaired at an AUDI service center. If the fluid level is above the specified range, fluid must be drained.8. Only new fluid may be added, as even minor contamination can lead to hydraulic system malfunctions.
9. Tighten the cap with a screwdriver.
Note for checking with the engine at operating temperature:
Warm up the vehicle by driving it. The fluid must warm up to approximately +50°C. Check the fluid level with the engine running. Front wheels must be in the straight-ahead position. With the cap screwed on, the level must be between the MIN and MAX marks on the other side of the indicator.
