Engine Mount Inspection
Engine mounts rarely require attention. However, damaged mounts must be replaced immediately to prevent increased loads and premature wear of driveline components.
INSPECTION
PROCEDURE
1. To inspect, slightly raise the engine to unload the mounts.
2. Raise the vehicle and support it on safety stands. Position a jack under the engine oil pan (place a wooden block between the jack head and the oil pan to distribute the load). Raise the jack to lift the engine slightly and unload the mounts.
Never perform any work under a vehicle supported only by a jack!
3. Inspect the mount cushions for cracks, hardening of the rubber, and separation from the metal base. Sometimes cushions crack through the middle.
4. Check for play between the mount brackets and the engine/vehicle frame (use a pry bar or large screwdriver as a lever). If play is found, lower the engine and tighten the mount fasteners.
5. To prevent rubber deterioration, treat the mount cushions with a special protective compound.
