Rear Crankshaft Seal Replacement
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the transmission (refer to Transmission Gearshift chapter).
2. Remove the flywheel/drive plate (refer to Flywheel/Drive Plate Removal and Installation).
3. Before removing the old seal, be sure to measure its installed depth (the distance between the seal face and the outer edge of the retainer), using a small rule or a vernier caliper. Record the measurement. The new seal must be installed to exactly the same depth.

4. Seal replacement can be performed without first removing the oil pan and the seal retainer. Carefully pry the old seal out of its bore in the retainer with a screwdriver.
To avoid damaging the crankshaft journal or the bore walls, wrap the screwdriver tip with a rag.

5. Lightly lubricate the edges of the journal and the lips of the new seal with universal grease, then, using a blunt tool for assistance, slide the seal onto the shaft. Using a drift and a hammer, seat the seal in the housing (a socket of the correct size or a length of pipe slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the seal may be used as a drift).
The procedure for replacing the seal with the holder removed is described in the Engine General and Major Repair section of this Chapter.
6. Install in the reverse order of removal.
7. Start the engine and check for oil leaks.
