Oil Pan Installation
INSTALLATION
PROCEDURE
1. Scrape all traces of sealant and old gasket material from the mating surfaces of the oil pan and block. Remove the end seal inserts from the oil pan or block. Thoroughly wipe the mating surfaces with a rag moistened with acetone. Clean and dry the threaded holes in the block.
2. Wash the oil pan with solvent and dry it thoroughly. Make sure the oil pan mounting flange is not deformed; if necessary, place the oil pan flange-side down on a flat wooden block and straighten it.
3. Apply sealant to the mating surfaces of the oil pump-to-block and the rear main seal retainer-to-block. Also apply sealant to the rear of the oil pan gasket at the corners of the semicircular end seal insert.
4. Carefully press the oil pan against the block.
5. Install two front, two rear and two center nuts and tighten them by hand. Install the remaining bolts and tighten the fasteners in several stages (with small increments) to the required torque. Start tightening the fasteners from the center toward the ends of the oil pan, working in a spiral pattern. Note that overtightening the fasteners may cause leaks.
6. Install the engine stiffener in place and secure it with bolts tightened to the required torque (see Specifications in the Transmission Chapter).
7. Fill with engine oil (see Adjustments and Routine Maintenance Chapter), start the engine and check the oil pan for leaks.
