Selective Catalytic Reduction
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system converts NOx into nitrogen and water by using a reductant, urea solution.
Urea Sensor

The urea solution gauge shows the approximate amount of urea solution remaining in the urea solution tank.
❈ The urea sensor image will appear whenever the ignition switch is turned to the ON position.
Low Urea Warning Message

Low urea warning messages appear when the urea level is below 5.4 L. When the "Low Urea" warning message appears with the SCR warning lamp (
), the urea tank must be refilled. If refilling is not done for a considerable distance, the visual warning system will increase in intensity, displaying the "Refill Urea" message with the SCR warning lamp (
).
In this case, the tank must be refilled soon. When the urea remaining in the tank reaches a level that is too low, the warning message "Refill Urea Tank or Vehicle Will Not Start" appears with the SCR warning lamp (
). "xxx km (miles)" indicates the remaining distance allowed, so do not continue driving to the limit of the remaining distance without refilling.
Otherwise, the vehicle cannot be restarted after the engine is turned off with the ignition switch. Based on driving pattern, environmental conditions and road profile, the remaining distance may differ from the actual distance driven.
When the "Low Urea" or "Refill Urea" message is displayed, add enough urea. When the "Refill Urea Tank or Vehicle Will Not Start" message is displayed, add enough urea. When the "Refill Urea Tank or Vehicle Will Not Start" message is displayed with the SCR warning lamp (
), the vehicle cannot be restarted after the engine is turned off with the ignition switch. For the above cases, full refilling is always recommended.
SCR System Malfunction

The SCR system malfunctions due to disconnected electrical components, incorrect urea, and so on.
"xxx km (miles)" indicates the remaining allowed driving distance, so do not continue driving to the limit of the remaining distance without correcting the cause of the malfunction. Otherwise, the vehicle cannot be restarted after the engine is turned off with the ignition switch. In this case, we recommend that the system be inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
Canceling Vehicle Restart Restriction

Once the warning system has reached the final stage and vehicle restart is disabled, it will only be canceled when the urea tank is refilled or the malfunction is corrected. If the vehicle cannot be restarted and the "Refill Urea Tank or Vehicle Will Not Start" message appears, add enough urea, wait a few minutes, and try to start the vehicle again. If the vehicle cannot be started regardless of the urea level, we recommend that the system be inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
Adding Urea Solution

To add urea solution from a refill hose
1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
2. Turn the urea solution tank cap counterclockwise to open it.
3. Fully insert the refill hose until it stops. Add urea solution that meets ISO 22241 up to the mark on the urea solution tank.
❈ Be very careful not to add urea solution to the fuel tank. Otherwise, vehicle performance will be adversely affected, causing various malfunctions.
❈ Never use a mixture of urea solution with additives or water. Foreign substances may enter the urea solution tank. Otherwise, vehicle performance will be adversely affected, causing various malfunctions.
❈ Use only urea solution specified in ISO 22241. Any unauthorized urea solution will certainly adversely affect vehicle performance, causing various malfunctions.
4. Turn the urea solution tank cap clockwise to close it securely.
To add urea solution from a refill bottle
1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
2. Turn the urea solution tank cap counterclockwise to open it.
3. Fully add urea solution that meets ISO 22241 up to the mark on the urea solution tank.
❈ Be very careful not to add urea solution to the fuel tank. Otherwise, vehicle performance will be adversely affected, causing various malfunctions.
❈ Be very careful not to overfill (fill completely) the urea solution tank while adding urea solution from a refill bottle. An overfilled urea solution tank will expand when it freezes, and this may cause serious damage to the urea solution tank or urea solution system.
Urea Solution Refilling: Approximately every 6000 km (urea solution consumption depends on road conditions, driving mode and environmental conditions).
❈ It takes some time for the cluster gauges to update after urea injection.
WARNING
- Do not apply any external impact to the DPF system. This may damage the catalyst installed inside the DPF system.
- Do not arbitrarily modify or tamper with the DPF system by rerouting or extending the exhaust pipe. This may adversely affect the DPF system.
- Avoid contact with water drained from the exhaust pipe. The water is slightly acidic and harmful to skin. If contact occurs, wash thoroughly.
- Any arbitrary manipulation or modification of the DPF system may cause system malfunction. The DPF system is controlled by a complex control unit.
- Wait until the DPF system has cooled down before performing maintenance, as it is hot due to heat generation. Otherwise, it may cause skin burns.
- Add only the specified urea solution when servicing your vehicle's urea solution system.
- The urea solution system (i.e., urea solution nozzle, urea solution pump and DCU) operates for approximately 2 more minutes to purge residual urea solution, even after the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position. Before performing maintenance, make sure the urea solution system is completely shut off.
- Poor quality urea solution or unapproved fluids may damage vehicle components, including the DPF system. Any unverified additives in the urea solution may clog the SCR catalyst and cause other malfunctions requiring replacement of the expensive DPF system.
- If urea solution contacts your eyes or skin, you must thoroughly wash the affected area.
- If you swallow urea solution, rinse your mouth thoroughly and drink plenty of fresh water. Then seek medical attention immediately.
- If your clothing is contaminated with urea solution, change your clothing immediately.
- If you have an allergic reaction to urea solution, seek medical attention immediately.
- Do not allow children to contact urea solution.
- Wipe up any spilled urea solution with water or a cloth. When urea solution crystallizes, wipe it with a sponge or cloth dampened with cold water. If urea solution leakage remains in air for a long period of time, it crystallizes into white deposits that damage the vehicle surface.
- Urea solution is not a fuel additive. Therefore, it must not be injected into the fuel tank. Otherwise, it may cause engine damage.
- Urea solution is an aqueous, non-flammable solution that is non-toxic, colorless and odorless.
- Store the urea solution tank only in a well-ventilated place. When urea solution is exposed to high temperatures of approximately 50 °C for a long period of time (i.e., direct sunlight), chemical decomposition may occur, releasing ammonia vapor.
Urea Solution Storage
- Do not store urea solution in containers made of certain materials (for example, aluminum, copper, copper alloy, or unalloyed and galvanized steel). Urea solution dissolves metallic materials, which can severely damage the exhaust gas aftertreatment system and make it non-repairable.
- Store urea solution only in containers made of the following materials. (DIN EN 10 088-1-/-2-/-3-specified CR-Ni steel, Mo-Cr-Ni steel, polypropylene and polyethylene)
Urea Solution Purity
- The following situations may damage the DPF system.
- Adding fuel or any unapproved fluids to the urea solution tank.
- Mixing additives into the urea solution.
- Adding water to dilute the urea solution. - Use only urea solution conforming to ISO 22241 or DIN 70070. If any unauthorized urea solution is added to the tank, we recommend that you contact an Authorized HYUNDAI Service Center.
- If any unauthorized contaminants enter the urea solution tank, the following problems may occur.
- Increased emissions
- DPF system malfunction
- Engine failure
Never add used urea solution drained from the tank (i.e., during vehicle service). Its purity cannot be guaranteed. Always add new urea solution.
Standard Urea Solution Specification
Fluids such as diesel fuel, gasoline and alcohol must never be used in the SCR system. Any fluid other than the recommended urea solution (conforming to ISO 22241 or DIN 70070) may damage SCR system components and degrade vehicle emissions.
WARNING
- When opening the urea solution tank cap at the top of the outside temperature, ammonia vapor may be released. Ammonia vapor has a pungent odor and primarily causes irritation to:
- Skin
- Mucous membranes
- Eyes
You may experience a burning sensation in the eyes, nose and throat, as well as coughing and watery eyes. Do not inhale ammonia vapor. Do not allow urea solution to come into direct contact with your skin. It is hazardous to your health. Flush affected areas with plenty of clean water. If necessary, seek medical attention. - When working with urea solution in an enclosed space, ensure good ventilation. When the urea solution container is opened, sharp-smelling vapor may escape.
- Keep urea solution out of reach of children.
- If urea solution spills onto the vehicle surface, flush the vehicle surface with clean water to prevent resulting corrosion.
- When refilling, be careful not to overfill the urea solution.
- If the vehicle has been parked for a long time at a very low ambient temperature (below 11 °C / 52 °F), the urea solution will freeze in the urea solution tank. With frozen urea, the tank level may not be detected correctly until the urea solution is thawed by the activated heater.
- The time required to thaw the urea solution varies depending on driving conditions and outside temperature.
- If poor-quality urea solution or a non-recommended fluid is supplied, damage may occur to vehicle components such as the aftertreatment device. If incorrect fuel is used, foreign matter will accumulate on the SCR catalyst and cause the catalyst to be pushed out or broken. After adding an incorrect urea solution, please visit the nearest service center as soon as possible.
- Fluids that are not recommended, such as diesel, gasoline and alcohol, must never be used in place of the recommended urea solution, which must meet ISO 22241 or DIN 70070.
- If poor-quality urea solution or a non-recommended fluid is supplied, damage may occur to vehicle components such as the aftertreatment device. If incorrect fuel is used, foreign matter will accumulate on the SCR catalyst and cause the catalyst to be pushed out or broken.
