Description and Operation

Description

The compressor is the drive unit of the air conditioning system.

Mounted on the side of the cylinder block, it is driven by the engine drive belt.

The compressor converts low-pressure, low-temperature gaseous refrigerant into high-pressure, high-temperature gaseous refrigerant.

Variable Swash Plate Compressor

The compressor has a swash plate that rotates and reciprocates the pistons to compress the refrigerant.

The variable displacement swash plate compressor adjusts the swash plate angle to change refrigerant displacement. It provides precise control of cooling capacity according to the vehicle interior and driving conditions.

The internally controlled variable swash plate compressor changes the swash plate angle through the MCV (mechanical control valve) in response to fluctuations in suction pressure.

The externally controlled variable displacement compressor changes the swash plate angle using the ECV (Electronic Control Valve) according to the electrical signal from the heater and air conditioner control unit.

This provides stable temperature control and improves driving comfort.

Repair Procedures

Removal

R Engine

  1. If the compressor is operating at its limit, run the engine at idle and let the air conditioner operate for several minutes, then stop the engine.

  2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

  3. Recover the refrigerant using a recovery/recharging station.

  4. Loosen the drive belt.

D 2.0 R VGT (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Drive Belt")

G 2.0 T-GDI-THETA (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Drive Belt")

G 3.3 T-GDI-LAMBDA (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Drive Belt")

  5. Remove the discharge line (A) and the suction line (B) from the compressor.

    Tightening torque: 3.9 - 5.9 N·m

  6. Remove the engine room cover.

D 2.0 R VGT (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Under Engine Cover")

G 2.0 T-GDI-THETA (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Engine Room Under Cover")

G 3.3 T-GDI-LAMBDA (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Engine Room Under Cover")

  7. Disconnect the ECV connector (A).

  8. Remove the compressor assembly (A) after loosening the bolts.

    Tightening torque: 20.00 - 33 N·m (2.04 - 3.36 kgf·m, 14.75 - 24.30 ft·lbf)

Lambda Engine

  1. If the compressor is operating at its limit, run the engine at idle and let the air conditioner operate for several minutes, then stop the engine.

  2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

  3. Recover the refrigerant using a recovery/recharging station.

  4. Remove the subframe.

(Refer to Suspension System — "Subframe")

  5. Loosen the drive belt.

D 2.0 R VGT (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Drive Belt")

G 2.0 T-GDI-THETA (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Drive Belt")

G 3.3 T-GDI-LAMBDA (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Drive Belt")

  6. Remove the discharge line (A) and the suction line (B) from the compressor.

    Tightening torque: 3.9 - 5.9 N·m

  7. Disconnect the ECV connector (A).

  8. Remove the compressor assembly (A) after loosening the bolts.

    Tightening torque: 20.00 - 33 N·m (2.04 - 3.36 kgf·m, 14.75 - 24.30 ft·lbf)

Installation

  1. Make sure the compressor mounting bolt (A) is threaded to the correct length. Tighten the mounting bolts in the specified tightening sequence.

    Tightening torque: 20.00 - 33 N·m (2.04 - 3.36 kgf·m, 14.75 - 24.30 ft·lbf)

  2. Install in the reverse order of removal.

    • When installing a new compressor, drain all compressor oil from the removed compressor and measure its volume. Subtract the drained oil volume from the initial capacity to calculate the amount of compressor oil to drain from the new compressor (through the suction port).

    • Replace the O-rings with new ones at each fitting and apply a thin coat of compressor oil before installation. Be sure to use O-rings suitable for R-134a to prevent leakage.

    • To prevent contamination, do not return oil to the container after dispensing and never mix it with other refrigerant oils.

    • Immediately after using the oil, close and seal the container cap to prevent moisture absorption.

Inspection

  1. Check the stopper and hub assembly (A) for discoloration, peeling, or other damage. If damaged, replace the assembly.

  2. Check the bearing clearance of the pulley (B) by rotating the pulley by hand. Replace the pulley with a new one if it is noisy or has excessive play/drag.

Inspection of Compressor with External Control Valve (ECV)

Compressor Type: Fixed-type compressor, External control valve, Internal control valve.

For the fixed type and internal control valve type, the compressor operation can be checked by the clutch engagement sound.

However, for the external control valve type, it cannot be checked this way because it does not have a clutch.

Therefore, the ECV should be checked using the KDS as shown below.

  1. Connect the KDS to the vehicle and select "A/C Compressor Test (ECV Type)".

    [ECV1]

  2. Prepare the vehicle according to the KDS instructions on the monitor. (Turn off only the A/C switch)

  3. Before inspecting the ECV compressor, check whether other DTCs are present. If so, resolve those issues first. If not, press the "OK" button to continue.

  4. Start Inspection

  5. Check the inspection result.

    [ECV7]

    [ECV8]

  6. If the result displays "Check", press "Check" and follow the instructions.

  7. Recheck the ECV from the first step.

Disassembly

  1. Remove the right front wheel.

(Refer to Suspension System - Wheel).

  2. Remove the front wheel guard [RH].

(Refer to Body - "Front Wheel Guard")

  3. Loosen the drive belt.

D 2.0 R VGT (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Drive Belt")

G 2.0 T-GDI-THETA (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Drive Belt")

G 3.3 T-GDI-LAMBDA (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Drive Belt")

  4. Remove the center bolt (A) and the hub bolts (B) while holding the pulley using the disc and hub bolt wrench (09977-3R000).

    Tightening torque: 15 - 21 N·m

  5. Remove the hub assembly (A) and the shim (slotted washer) (B), taking care not to lose the shims.

  6. Remove the pulley (B) after removing the snap ring (A) with snap ring pliers.

  7. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
